As you may know, I'm a member of the Providence Singers. If you have attended a performance of Messiah at the Vets, you've heard us sing. If you haven't heard us, click over to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@providencesingers8945. A good place to start would be the video "All of Us," a gospel-inspired chorus from last year's performance of Considering Matthew Shepard at the WaterFire Arts Center.
Our upcoming fall concert, BORN OF LIGHT, focuses on favorite composers from the 20th and 21st centuries and features music that's affirming, hopeful, and full of light and joy.
Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms is melodic and widely accessible. The musical style is often very similar to his popular works; in fact, he included music written for (but not included in) West Side Story. This will be sung in Hebrew and performed with harp and percussion.
Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols was originally composed for treble voices and harp. The Providence Singers will perform the SATB arrangment accompanied by Hyungjung Choi, principal harpist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. The 11 short movements are based on medieval texts, and the music is in turn joyful, serene, comforting, reflective, and exciting.
Morten Lauriden's Lux Aeterna is celebrated for its lush harmonies and profound emotional depth. The work is structured as a choral cycle with five movement, each drawing from Latin texts that reference light.
