In Harmony, a new after-school choral program, seeks to inspire the next generation of singers by offering exceptional musical experiences to high school-aged students from low-income and minority-majority communities. This new education program has received multi-year funding. The pilot program will start in the Pawtucket, Rhode Island, area, with plans to expand to the broader Providence area. 

In Harmony seeks to supplement existing high school music education programs by providing an inspiring choral singing experience and fostering more participation in the choral arts. Weekly rehearsals will be held from January through May at the Blackstone Academy Charter School. 

 

Role Summary:

Providence Singers is seeking a Choral Music Director to lead the In Harmony vocal ensemble. This part-time, year-round contract position will provide artistic and educational leadership for the group and build the program from the ground up. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic educator who inspires a life-long love of music in their students. The Music Director will collaborate with the Artistic Director of the Providence Singers to program a diverse repertoire of music for the students, actively recruit new ensemble members, and lead one rehearsal per week in Pawtucket, Rhode Island from January through May.

General Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to engage, inspire, and motivate high school-aged students

  • Proven success in the growth of a choral program

  • Comfortable using innovative teaching methods to further the artistic capabilities of the group

  • Demonstrated expertise in teaching developmentally appropriate vocal technique and applicable musical skills

  • Experience programming a diverse repertoire of music that would appeal to first-time singers

  • Passionate about building community within an ensemble, building confident singers, and inspiring students to attend each wee

  • Excited about building a program from inception to sustainability through collaboration with Providence Singers Artistic leadership, student recruitment, and other actions as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years conducting experience with high school-aged students

  • Undergraduate degree in music required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • References - (1) former student, (2) professional colleague

  • Audition with a Mock Choir - Lead a small group of young singers 

  • Rehearsal Footage - Provide unedited video (15-20 minutes) leading a rehearsal

Compensation Statement

This is a contract position for 1 year with an option to extend if agreed by both parties. Compensation commensurate with experience.  The selected candidate will have access to administrative staff support and an accompanist for rehearsals and performances.
