The weekly eNotes update will be send every Thursday morning. If you don't receive eNotes, please check with your section leader or contact Emily Atkinson, the eNotes editor.  You can also find them here in descending chronological order, in case you need to refer back.  We will strive to keep the eNotes to one a week, so that members aren't inundated with messages.

FROM CHRISTINE

Good morning, Singers —

For next week, please prepare movements 3 and 6 of the Brahms, with particular attention to the fugues. The goal for next week is complete musical independence on the fugues (be ready for any additional challenges, such as mixed formation or singing a cappella).

FROM ELAINE

Masks:

The extra NATS masks people ordered with Sue’s assistance are scheduled for delivery October 27 and will be available for pickup before the November 2 rehearsal. Some members ordered extra masks for any Singer who is on a tight personal budget. To claim one, email Elaine.

Website:

Everyone should be able to access the website’s member pages if you have signed up and are logged in. If you have done neither, you can still access the calendar and practice resources by moving your cursor over Members in the main menu to bring up the sub menu. You must be signed up and logged in to open the Members page and access the Members Directory and eNotes archives.

Ticket sales:

As of 6:00 this morning, 107 people have made reservations for our Sunday, November 7 concert at the Cathedral, and 8 people have purchased tickets for the Saturday evening concert at St. Mary’s in Bristol. Don’t panic quite yet—we have a little over three weeks to go, and most ticket sales occur in the last two weeks.

Concert posters, season trifold brochures, and mailing postcards will be available at rehearsal for members who want to help spread the word.

Concert volunteers:

We need ushers, ticket scanners, proof of vaccine checkers, people to hand out masks to those who forget them, and people to handle at-the-door ticket sales. Friends and family who volunteer can attend the concert without charge.

Fruit sales:

13 days left! Thank you to everyone who is selling on paper or online. Thanksgiving family gifts! Teacher gifts! Grandparent and neighbor gifts! To date, we have sold 34 boxes of fruit = 625 pounds with a profit of $240. Citrus is a good way to stay healthy in the winter. Donating citrus is a nice thing to do for TapIn’s Thanksgiving baskets. We are making progress to our 100-box goal. Thanks for selling Florida’s best fruit! https://www.floridaindianrivergroves.com/ecommerce/723608.

FROM CHRISTINE

Singers,

For next week, please review the third and sixth movements of the Brahms Requiem, preferably singing your part against a recording to help identify areas of insecurity. Your fluency will help meet our goal of singing with eyes out of scores.

Always a pleasure to rehearse with you. See you next week!

Christine

FROM ELAINE

Masks during rehearsal: Masks must cover your nose and mouth in the Carter Center. Please keep your mask on in the rehearsal room. If you need to eat, please do it outdoors or in the lounge area well distanced from others.

Need another singers’ mask? Email suefarrier@cox.net by noon Friday, October 8.

Building our mailing list: Some people were confused by Tuesday’s request for mailing addresses. To clarify, those little cards were intended to harvest the sort of mailing addresses people know off the top of their heads—family members, neighbors, and so on—for our direct mail database. If you took some cards home with you intending to bring them back next week, please email information about potential audience members to Elaine by Friday morning October 8. The season brochures will be mailed on Friday afternoon, so the mailing list needs to be finalized by noon. If you miss this deadline, here’s the next one: Thursday, October 21, in time for the Brahms concert postcard mailing going out October 22.

Fruit sales:  Thank you everyone for your efforts at fruit selling!  We are making progress to our 100-box delivery-to-organization goal. Providence Singers partners with Tap In every year for our donations in honor of Dotsie Shaw, a longtime Singers alto and Tap In volunteer. Three weeks to go until October 26. www.FloridaIndianRiverGrove.com  ordering ID 723608 or www.FloridaIndianRiverGroves.com/ecommerce/723608. To save shipping costs (and help us reach 100 boxes for delivery), select “send to organization”. If you are buying fruit to donate, use “send to organization” and send Beth an email of your donation. The fruit will be delivered the week before Thanksgiving. Please contact Beth Zarlengo with any questions – zarlengo@cox.net, 401-447-6331.

Concert posters: Concert posters will be available at Tuesday’s rehearsal. Members are encouraged to take one (or more) to hang on community spaces—coffee shops, libraries, churches, book stores, apartment buildings, and shops that support local performing arts organizations.

Other concert promotional ideas? Got a great idea for getting the word out?  Send Elaine an email at executive@providencesingers.org

Carter Center Exit Doors

Please use ONLY the front doors to exit the building. When an emergency exit is used, an alarm goes off. After the Carter staff leave (around 9:00pm), an alarm will trigger a visit from the police and we’ll be charged a fine.

More Singers Masks?

Additional masks can purchased in one of two ways:

  • Contact Sue Farrier, suefarrier@cox.net, by noon on Friday, October 8.  Sue and Elaine will coordinate a one-time group order.

  • Directly from this website:  stores DOT inksoft DOT com/nats/shop/home. They are $9.95 each, plus postage and handling. Please use this option if you wish to order masks for another organization.

Website update

There is a bug in Wix, our new website platform, that’s booting members off the list that grants access to the private member pages. If you haven’t been able to access the member pages while logged in, that’s why.  The folks at Wix are working on it and we hope to have the situation resolved shortly.

FROM CHRISTINE

Singers, next week we’ll continue rehearsing the Wachner, becoming less reliant on the piano (some a cappella singing, pulsing 1/8 notes throughout). Thanks to the many who have reviewed the parts independently. Prior to arriving to rehearsals, please be sure you’ve had plenty of time to hydrate and sing a few lip trills.

See you next week!

Christine

FROM ELAINE

Mask etiquette: Masks are highly effective, but only if they’re worn properly.  For the safety of all our members, please make sure your mask is snugly fitted and that it covers your mouth AND your nose.

New Broadway music pickup: “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” the second of two back-ordered selections, will be available for pickup at our next rehearsal. (This season's purchasers only—if you rehearsed for the March 2020 Broadway gala, you already have this.)

Birthdays: It’s a longstanding custom to sing to members whose birthdays fall on a rehearsal day.  But. If you would rather not have this personal info made public, or if you simply would prefer a serenade-free birthday, please contact Elaine and we’ll make sure your preferences are honored.

Our new board-approved Covid safety policy (announced in rehearsal Tuesday) is pasted below, and posted on the website on the Safety Protocol page, which is in the submenu of the About page. The policy will be updated as needed.

The safety of our chorus members, staff, and audience are of the utmost importance to the Providence Singers.  The Organization will follow the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and the guidance provided by the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts when making decisions regarding risk mitigation procedures, vaccination, testing, and other areas of concern regarding Covid-19 protection measures.  This policy will comply with all federal and state laws and local health authorities, as applicable. Elaine Cunningham, Executive Director and the Personnel Committee will establish protocols and documentation to manage this body of work.

Providence Singers Vaccination Policy

In light of this core concern and the particular risks presented by singing, Singers are required to be fully vaccinated, and show proof of vaccination, against Covid-19 prior to their first rehearsal in order to participate.  There are no exceptions to this policy.  This policy will comply with all applicable federal and state laws and is based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health authorities.  If you have any questions, please contact Elaine Cunningham, Executive Director.

Policy will expire at the end of fiscal year 2021-2022 unless renewed or revised by a majority of the Trustees of the Providence Singers.

Vaccines:  Required for all members

Masks: Required at rehearsals

Self-Isolation:  Members will not attend rehearsal while symptomatic with any illness.  Sitting in the back to take notes is not permitted.

Physical Distancing:

  • Rehearsals:  As an added level of comfort and hygiene, we will have assigned seating and maintain 3 ft of distance between singers at rehearsals.

  • Concerts:  Our ability to space singers will be determined by the options at the venue and the public health recommendations at the time of the event.

Contact Tracing:  Due to the strong risk mitigation measures in place for members (vaccinations, masks, and staying home when ill) no member will meet the CDC definition of a “close contact;  therefore, the Providence Singers will not be conducting formal contact tracing.

Testing:  There will be no formal mechanism for requiring testing or reporting on testing for our members; however, in accordance with CDC recommendations, we strongly recommend and ask that you to test when you engage in activities that are higher risk, specifically travel.

  • Travel:  Please obtain a PCR test 3-5 days after the end of your travel and do not return to rehearsal until your results come back.

  • Positive Test:  Do not return to rehearsal for 14 days of either (a) the onset of symptoms or (b) the date your positive test was taking if you are asymptomatic.

  • Guideline:  If you are ever asking “should I get tested?” go get a test!

We recognize that we cannot dictate restrictions beyond the time we are together. That said, our individual responsibility to this group does not start and end with rehearsal. For this to work, we all need to reduce our risk as much as we can beyond these walls. Please take a conservative approach to your other activities where you are able. This will be different for each of us, but the collective effort will keep us together.

eNotes PS:  Fruit Sales

Our annual fruit fundraiser has begun.

FROM CHRISTINE

Dear Singers,

For next week, review Wachner’s “We Two Alone” pages 33-44)with the practice tracks. Focus on the cross-rhythms (for the half notes in 12/8, pulse four 1/8 notes, which is counterintuitive to the organization of the meter).

FROM CHRISTINE

Friends, it was so uplifting to see and hear you all again. Excellent start to the season, and thank you for your flexibility with our atypical (and temporary) rehearsal practices of masking and distancing.

In the coming days you’ll receive a link to practice tracks for “We Two Alone.” Please review with special attention to subdividing the cross-rhythms. For those who’ve not yet sung the Brahms Requiem, there are many practice resources available. Please don’t feel overwhelmed — you will learn the piece sooner than you think, especially if you spend some time focusing on one movement per week. Recommended resource: (please Google “ChordPerfect Brahms.” The first result will be an excellent practice resource (your part in the foreground; other parts quietly in the background). I don’t include the link here, as too many will trigger spam filters.

Masks: The masks you received Tuesday are highly rated by NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), but as you discovered, the elastic straps are not adjustable. Please make yours a snug fit by tying a loose knot in the elastic and experimenting until you have a close fit covering nose and chin.

The masks are machine washable in cold water, but air dry to preserve the metal nose pieces.

If seasonal allergies mean you need to blow your nose, please leave the room before removing your mask.

Carter Center pledge: Singers are required to complete a brief online safety pledge. From the Singers website homepage, hover your cursor on “About” to see the submenu and click on “Safety protocols”. Click the big red link to the Carter Center Safety Pledge.

Part of the pledge is that we stay home if we feel unwell. This means we don’t come and sit in the back of the room to take notes.

Website sign-in: Some Singers who attempt to sign in have been receiving error messages saying that their email address isn’t in the system. The first time you sign in, please click the SIGN UP button, not the LOG IN link. (The question “Already a member?” Is admittedly confusing, but it refers to being a website member.)  After you receive your approval email, you’ll be able to use the LOG IN link.

The virtual video of "Abide with Me” is available on the Singers’ Facebook page and YouTube channel.

COMMUNITY

Dear Providence Singers,

I LOVED hearing you sing Happy Birthday to me on Tuesday - 'twas a rare treat to be sung to by eighty persons, in such glorious harmony!

That being said, there was a bit of a misunderstanding about whose birthday it really was!  I am guessing that someone saw the name Nielsen on Tuesday September 7 and assumed it was I. But it would have been the 94th birthday of my late husband Louis Nielsen. There was no chance for me to say this before the singing, so I decided I had best go along, take it all in for us both and explain later, after I figured out the mystery!

Louis and I met in the Singers in 1979, and many of the Singers sang at our wedding.  The Providence Singers was a hugely important presence in our lives and our marriage of thirty-eight years.  As it still is for me, almost forty-three years later.

With gratefulness for our special community,

Martha Nielsen

FROM CHRISTINE

Dear Singers,

After nearly 18 months, we’ll reconvene for rehearsals next week. Let’s make the first moments of rehearsal even more special by opening with a read-through of Moses Hogan's “Abide With Me.” Bring your scores from last semester, and please plan to warm up fully in your car. We will not warm up in rehearsal on the first day. Since we will be spaced out in rehearsals, it will not be possible to share music scores. New members need not purchase “Abide With Me" scores — we’ll simply sing through the piece and move on to Brahms.

Wachner commission

Your section leaders have emailed a PDF of Julian Wachner’s “We Two Alone,” which you will receive in hard copy on Tuesday. Do not print the Wachner piece — it’s 48 pages long. Do review the final section (pages 33 to end), which we’ll rehearse on Tuesday.

Please arrive with a well-fitted mask, in the event that the resonance masks we distribute are not the right fit for you.

Thanks; see you soon!

Christine

Safety protocols

  • Masks: Masks are required in the Carter Center. Singers will receive a resonance mask on Tuesday. We will rehearse and perform our concerts in masks until the level of community transmission is significantly lower.

  • Assigned seating: Please find your assigned seat when you arrive.

  • Carter Center pledge: Singers are required to complete a brief online safety pledge. Sending links in eNotes sometimes triggers spam filters; this time, we’re sacrificing convenience in favor of better delivery. So:

  1. Please go to our website, “providencesingers DOT org” (but type the dot – understand?)

  2. On the home page, hover your cursor on “About” to see the submenu and click on “Safety protocols”

  3. Click the big red link to the Carter Center Safety Pledge and answer the questions ASAP.

  4. Invoices

If you have not received an invoice for dues and music, check your spam filter, and if it’s not there, contact Elaine or your section leader. Please pay online before Tuesday’s rehearsal.

First rehearsal is Tuesday, September 7 at the Carter Center, RI Philharmonic Music School, 667 Waterman Avenue, East Providence

  • Music pickup begins at 6:45, and rehearsal starts promptly at 7:15.

  • Arrive wearing a mask.

  • Bring your Broadway music, Brahms, and Abide With Me, if you have it, and a pencil.

  • Wear your name tag. If you need a replacement, contact Elaine. New members will receive name tags when they check in.

  • Bring a full water bottle. The water fountains at Carter Center are out of service.

Singers—

After nearly 18 months, we’ll reconvene for rehearsals in less than two weeks. Let’s make the first moments of rehearsal even more special by opening with “Abide With Me.” Bring your scores from last semester, and please plan to warm up fully in your car. We will not warm up in rehearsal on the first day. Since we will be spaced out in rehearsals, it will not be possible to share music scores. MASKS REQUIRED and Covid safety

The Rhode Island Philharmonic has implemented a mask policy for all who rehearse in the Carter Center. Masks will be required upon entering the building and throughout the duration of our rehearsals until the requirement is lifted. The Providence Singers have purchased special resonance masks for singers that may be worn during rehearsals. We are told that the air is exchanged every 6 minutes in the rehearsal rooms, and we will plan to rehearse in the Large Hall in order to space out as much as possible. Resonance masks will be given to singers at the first rehearsal; however, please plan to wear a well-fitted, high quality mask in the event that the resonance mask is not an ideal fit for you.

VACCINE VERIFICATION

Thanks to those who have submitted a photo of their vaccine cards. A reminder that we’ll hold a Zoom session this evening, at 7pm for those who prefer to show their cards rather than send them in advance. The session will be for vaccine verification only and is expected to last 15 minutes (singers may sign off once their status has been verified).

Time-sensitive request: we’ve received videos from the following singers. Please check your name to be sure you’re included if you’ve submitted a video. Please do not delete the video from your own Google Drive until the video has been released. An omissions should be reported immediately to Christine.

Proof of vaccination is required by September 1. If you have misplaced your vaccination card and if you are a Rhode Island resident, you can obtain a copy of your vaccination record at https://portal.ri.gov/VaccineRecord/s/. Please either:

  • Take a picture of your vaccination card or record and send to executive@providencesingers.org, OR

  • Attend this Wednesday's Zoom session Aug 18 at 7pm  (login credentials to come) and show it there

Music and annual dues:

  • Invoices for music and dues will be sent tomorrow, in separate emails. Dues are $150. Music costs will vary.  Everyone will need the new Wachner piece. The cost of copying was a little over $10 per copy, so the cost to individual Singers will be $10. Brahms Requiem is $12, and the Broadway package is approximately $33.

  • You can pay online directly from the invoices by credit card, or at Carter Center before the first rehearsal by check or credit card. (No cash, please.) Rehearsal is Tuesday, September 7 at 7:15. Music pickup begins at 6:45.

Masks:

  • The Providence Singers staff and Board of Trustees are committed to the safety of our community. Since the CDC is currently recommending that masks be worn indoors, and given the super-spreader nature of well-supported singing, the board will meet on August 23 to update our safety policy regarding mask requirements.

  • In order to have masks available if they are necessary, we are in the process of acquiring masks that are specially designed for singers. If you already have a singers’ mask, or if you prefer to use a different type of mask, please contact Elaine (executive@providencesingers.org) ASAP.

eNotes August 6, 2021

Dear Singers,

All members of the Providence Singers are required to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to participate this season. By fully vaccinated, there will need to have been two weeks following the second vaccine dose before you should attend rehearsals.

We will need proof of vaccination status prior to the start of rehearsals (Tuesday September 7). This can be done in one of two ways:

- email a photo/jpg/pdf of your vaccination card to executive@providencesingers.org

or

- present the card at a special Zoom session on Wednesday, August 18 at 7pm (credentials will be sent out at the beginning of that week).

Thank you, everyone!
